yvette sedlakova
A Czech-born, London-based multidisciplinary, neurodivergent artist, video editor, visual storyteller and self-trained dancer who graduated with a BA (Hons) in Documentary Photography and Moving Image at the London College of Communication in 2023. Since graduating, she has continued to develop a sustained practice in visual art, creative contemporary dance and improvisation, yoga, Pilates and meditation.
Her practice is deeply influenced by the stories of her ancestors from former Communist Czechoslovakia. Her creative journey is driven by an insatiable curiosity to explore the complexities of human experience and conditions with humanitarian intentions. It aims to shed light on the tensions between personal experience and the broader forces that shape people's lives. Her materials explore the edges of spirituality and socio-political landscapes, continuously informed by ongoing research on mental health crises, intergenerational trauma, displacement, social (in)justice, and decolonisation, explored through the psychoanalytical lens in the context of global capitalism and patriarchy.
Her studies in the ethics of representation and the power of mass media shifted her focus from still photography to film. The film, as a medium, offers the ability to weave together multiple layers of meaning—through photographic stills, moving image, sound, voice narration, music, and poetry—to tell emotionally charged, multi-dimensional stories. This shift allows her to address complex social issues in a more nuanced, holistic way, reflecting both the external and internal landscapes of the people and places she documents.
Her creative endeavours encompass poetic, experimental, and dreamlike aesthetics, guided by intuitive thinking, editing, and a hand-held camera. She incorporates ethereal light play, natural elements and textures into her work as an invitation for moral imagination
She is currently at the early stage of developing a dance movement practice that is inspired by energy, vibration, multidisciplinary encompassing, energetic muscle memory, following tensions, impulses, the notion of reparative movement, choreographic practices as well as improvisation, stillness; examining the relationships between the self and others, the private and public, the natural and built environments to deepen engagement with diverse audiences and community practices in the form of collaborative and solo performances.
